The Hatton W. Sumners Restored Courtroom
The Old Red Dallas County Courthouse originally contained six courtrooms. Today, the Hatton W. Sumners Restored Courtroom on the fourth floor of Old Red stands as a testament to the craftsmanship and detail of the 1892 courthouse. Fully restored, it contains an elaborate judge's bench, jury box and gallery seating. |
|
| The turret rooms on the northeast and northwest corners represent the jury deliberation room and judge's chambers, respectively. Presently, the Courtroom is the only room in Old Red with a complete set of reproduced stained glass lunettes - the original windows were removed in 1967 as part of a renovation to modernize the building. To see the Restored Courtroom, visit Old Red at 2pm for a Building Tour (please call ahead for availability). |

| Originally created as part of the Magnolia Petroleum Company exhibit at the 1939 New York World's Fair, this neon sign later graced the Mobil service station in the Casa Linda Shopping Center east of White Rock Lake. |

|
With the discovery of new oilfields in Texas and surrounding states after World War I, Dallas emerged as a major financial and equipment center, symbolized by the Magnolia Petroleum Company's construction on Commerce Street of a 29-story office tower, the tallest building west of the Mississippi.
This tower included the original double Pegasus on its roof, which became known locally as the unofficial logo of the city of Dallas. Today, another Pegasus glows in Old Red's first floor lobby - this Pegasus was originally built for the 1939 World's Fair in New York City, but was later moved to the Casa Linda Mobil Oil Station, near White Rock Lake in Dallas.
The discovery of the East Texas field in 1930 transformed the city's economic base from cotton to oil. Dallas became headquarters to producers, wildcatters, drilling contractors, investors, and scouts. Local bankers were quick to fund their efforts by making loans and accepting oil reserves as collateral. By the end of the decade, nearly 20 percent of the people in Dallas County depended on the oil industry for their income. |

In 1972, the Jamieson Film Company was absorbed into a Houston firm, but the legacy of Dallas filmmaking remains. Toys and Games Program
What did kids do before video games and TV? Childhood favorites such as marbles, Toss Across, Old Maid, and hula hoops return as children learn about the different toys that entertained kids over the decades. Along with experiencing these games, each child will create their own Mr. Potato Head from real potatoes and clay body parts! |

The Dallas skyline comes to life as kids test their building skills by making 3-D models of Dallas skyscrapers and create architecture rubbings of the Old Red Courthouse. Learning about architecture would not be complete without each child creating a colorful foam building to take home.
